Excavation of the Roman Basilica

Occupying the complete eastern end, the Basilica held a preeminent position in the Forum. The building was approached from the forum through a wide central door, 3.4 m wide. The building occupied an area of 30 x 12 m, with the main hall embracing an area of 23 x 12 m.

Inside the Basilica, a thick, yellow, water-resistant mortar floor was found in situ. It represents a subfloor for a marble or stone floor. The Basilica originally featured four rows of internal columns to sustain the building’s timber roof.
