Forum Pavement

The Forum Pavement is made of rectangular slabs of white limestone that are well-finished and smooth, fitting flush against one another. A stone gutter cut from thicker slabs of limestone runs around the perimeter of the forum, serving as part of the drainage system linked to the adjoining buildings.

The paved area was originally lined on its four sides with two steps made of white limestone blocks. In a later phase of construction dating to the early 2nd century AD, the entire northern side of the forum was elevated and aggrandized. This remodeling included the addition of three steps to the N Portico, forming five steps altogether.
